Theoretical weight from nominal dimensions (steel 7850 kg/m³). Actual weight varies within the standard's tolerances (e.g. ±4–6 % per length). The result is indicative and does not replace the mill certificate or a weighbridge. Beta: if you spot an error, please tell us.

How the weight is calculated

The mass of a line item is m = A · ρ · L: the cross-section area A, the density ρ and the length L. For steel ρ = 7850 kg/m³, so 1 cm² of section weighs 0.785 kg per metre. The mass per metre (kg/m) comes from the standard's table or, where the table has none, from the nominal dimensions; the tag next to the size tells which.

Plates are calculated by area: 7.85 kg/m² for every millimetre of thickness. On teardrop plate the pattern adds about 2.5 kg/m² (mill dependent).

Choosing a material changes the density ρ (kg/m³): Stainless 1.4301 / 1.4307 (304) — 7900, Stainless 1.4404 / 1.4571 (316) — 8000, Aluminium (6060 / 6082) — 2700, Copper Cu-ETP — 8930, Brass CW614N — 8470.

The paint (coating) area is the outer surface per metre of length (m²/m) from the table, times the length and the quantity; plates count both faces.

The result is the theoretical weight from the nominal dimensions. The actual weight varies within the standard's tolerances; see the accuracy question below.

Frequently asked questions

Is the steel weight calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free and needs no sign-up. The list is kept in this browser, and the “Share” button gives a link that opens it on another device.

How accurate is the calculated weight?

It is the theoretical weight: nominal dimensions from the standard's table and a density of 7850 kg/m³ for steel. The actual mass of a single length varies within the standard's tolerances, e.g. ±6 % for t ≤ 4 mm and ±4 % for t > 4 mm for angles to EN 10056-2. For a deal, the mill certificate and the weighbridge apply.

Which standards are the sizes from?

EN (Europe): EN 10365, EN 10056-1, EN 10219/10210, EN 10220, EN 10058–10061; GOST: GOST 8239, 26020, 8240, 8509, 8510, 8732, 10704, 30245, 2590, 2591, 103; ASME / ASTM (US): Pipe ASME B36.10M / B36.19M; shapes ASTM A6 / AISC (W, S, C, MC, L, HSS). EN is selected by default; the buttons above the search switch the standard.

How many bars should I buy, and how much waste will there be?

The weight calculator does not plan the cuts. Enter the lengths in Linear cutting (1D): it nests the pieces into stock lengths (e.g. 6 or 12 m), allows for the kerf, and shows the number of bars and the waste.

How is the paint and galvanizing area calculated?

The area is the outer surface per metre (m²/m) from the table, times the length and the quantity; plates count both faces. Hot-dip galvanizing also coats the inside of tubes: tick “Include the inside of tubes (galvanizing)”. Tick “Include plate edges” if the plate edges are painted too.
